Do the State and
Union Territory differ from each other?
With the
central government deciding to restructure Jammu and Kashmir, there will now be
28 states and 9 union territories in the country. In India presently, after the revoke of Article 370 and 35A there are
28 states and 9 union territories. But now Jammu and Kashmir will be given the
status of Union Territory.
Moreover,
Ladakh will also be separated from Jammu and Kashmir and will be given the
status of Union Territory. Nevertheless, what is the difference between the
State and the Union Territory? Many do not know about this. So let's learn

What is a State?
It is a
constituent entity under the Indian Constitution which has an independent
government.
This
government is known as 'State Government'. This government is chosen by the
people's vote.
● States
have the power to legislate and amend their laws.
● Each state
has an independent assembly and a chief minister. At this point, the governor
is in the form of a delegate to the president.

What is a Union Territory?
● The Union
territory is a small administrative unit. Over which the Centre is in control.
Direct rules of the Central Government
apply in these places.
● These
rules are implemented by the Governor.
● The Deputy
Governor acts as a representative of the President and is elected by the
Central Government.
On behalf of
the Union Territories, the high house of parliament, that is New Delhi and
Puducherry in the Rajya Sabha, will have no representation.
